Mike Evans- Chairman

I first was on the council before Sept 1992 and later served as Vice Chair. Currently I have held a regular council position since Sept 2004. I filled the un-expired term following Ms McDaniel’s resignation in March of 2006 as Chair and was elected in Sept 2006.I am the Cultural Team leader and have volunteered for the Intertribal Team. I am the Tribal delegate to WWIETP (Western Washington Indian Employment and training Program. and for STOWW (Small Tribes Organization of Western Washington). I believe that sovereignty including Federal recognition and cultural growth and use are important issues for the Tribe. The fight must continue for Federal recognition but not at the expense of services and culture of the Tribe.
I have been involved in learning the language of the Puget Sound, t’ilib-shudeb (a performing arts group started by the Duwamish, but open to all), several non-profit corporations and the canoe culture.

I live in Kent and have three adult children. I serve on several boards and I am the father and skipper of the Blue Heron Canoe. I received my native name didahalqid from taq’wsheblu (Vi Hilbert) and ?esweli (Zalmai Zahir) on October 27, 2001.
